Smile, You're on Cabin Camera
Continental Airlines has begun installing video surveillance in some of its aircraft.
by LISA MATTE
CONTINENTAL AIRLINES IS MOVING AHEAD WITH PLANS TO INSTALL SECURITY CAMERAS IN TWO OF ITS BOEING 777-200S. According to a report issued by the American Association of Airport Executives, the cabin surveillance systems provided by Spirent Systems are part of a program designed to identify enhancements that would make airliners less susceptible to hijacking and terrorism. Continental was one of several airlines that signed on to test security technology in the wake of Sept. 11, 2001.
The program is funded by a grant from the FAA. Each system includes several cameras, a video server, two video displays in the cockpit and other networking components. Cameras will provide pilots with comprehensive viewing of the flight deck door area and passenger compartment. Several configuration options will be tested during the six-month in-flight trial period.
