TSA Announces Staff Reductions
In a move to streamline operations and trim overhead, The Transportation Security Administration has announced it will reduce its workforce by 6,000 by the end of this fiscal year
by LISA MATTE STAFFING ADJUSTMENTS INCLUDING A REDUCTION IN THE SCREENER WORKFORCE AND THE REMOVAL OF A REGULATION REQUIRING LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICERS AT AIRPORT SECURITY CHECKPOINTS are on the table as the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) moves to streamline operations. At a press conference last week TSA administrator Adm. Loy outlined a wide range of measures designed to refine aviation security and eventually provide $2.3 billion to airlines to cover their share of security costs since the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001.
TSA's screener workforce totaled 55,600 on Mar. 31. Due in part to budget constraints, the agency will cut 3,000 positions by May 31 and another 3,000 positions by Sept. 30, the end of the 2003 fiscal year. Whenever possible, Loy said, TSA will use attrition˜estimated at about 700 jobs a month˜to ease pressures of the workforce reductions.
