Smart Card in the Works
The European Commission and the Swiss Office are developing a plan to use smart cards and biometrics to identify frequent travelers.
by LISA MATTE
SMART CARD SOLUTIONS PROVIDER GEMPLUS HAS BEEN SELECTED TO SUPPLY SMART CARD TECHNOLOGY AND EXPERTISE RELATIVE TO AIR TRAVEL SECURITY ISSUES FOR S-TRAVEL, an initiative developed and sponsored by the European Commission and the Swiss Office following the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11. The project aims to develop international security standards and procedures using smart cards and biometrics to identify frequent travelers. Pilot testing of the new technology is slated for late 2003 and 2004. If testing is successful, S-Travel may eventually expand to allow automated check-in services.
