More FFDOs On the Way
On July 20, the TSA will launch its second class for federal flight deck officers
by LISA MATTE BEGINNING JULY 20, THE TRANSPORTATION SECURITY ADMINISTRATION WILL LAUNCH FULL-SCALE TRAINING OF COMMERCIAL AIRLINE PILOTS who volunteer to serve as federal flight deck officers (FFDOs) responsible for defending the cockpit against terrorist attacks. TSA trained its first class of pilots in April and has used feedback from the initial group of graduates to fine-tune the program before resuming enrollment of interested candidates.
FFDO candidates will receive intensive training that includes firearms instruction, defensive tactics and information on how to transport their service weapons. TSA will pay for training costs and will issue the handguns, as well as other required equipment. Selected pilots must complete all assessments, including cognitive, psychological, medical or physical ability requirements, prior to enrolling. Pilots will be required to pay for travel, lodging and daily expenses. Additional re-certification training will be required twice a year.
