TSA Issues Security Reminder
Detection of a handgun concealed in a Teddy bear prompts renewed emphasis on TSA’s responsibility to screen all passengers
by LISA MATTE PROMPTED BY THE DISCOVERY EARLIER THIS MONTH OF A LOADED HANDGUN CONCEALED IN A STUFFED TEDDY BEAR, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) is reminding travelers of its responsibility to screen all passengers and bags regardless of how harmless they may appear. On July 12, TSA screeners in Orlando discovered the weapon stuffed inside a teddy bear as it passed through an X-ray machine. The toy reportedly was in the possession of a 10-year-old boy who had accepted it as a gift from a stranger who approached him at his Orlando hotel earlier that week. While an FBI investigation into the incident continues, the boy's family was questioned and released when it became apparent they had no prior knowledge of the toy's contents.
