UK Eurostar Goes High-Speed
New track cuts down travel time between London and Paris, and London and Brussels.
by LISA MATTE
THE RECENT COMPLETION OF A 46-MILE STRETCH OF DEDICATED HIGH-SPEED TRACKS on the UK side of the Eurostar rail network will cut 20 minutes off the commute between London and Paris, and London and Brussels. The schedule change, effective Sept. 28, will shorten travel time between London and Paris to two hours and 35 minutes. The Eurostar journey between London and Brussels will take two hours and 20 minutes.
To date, the Eurostar has reached its top operating speed of 186 mph only on existing high-speed track in France and Belgium. The $3 billion project, completed in January, is the UK’s first new main line railway route in more than a century. A second phase, slated for completion in 2007, will cut another 20 minutes off Eurostar’s travel time between London and Paris/Brussels.
