DHS Aims to Add 5,000 Armed Agents
In a speech last week, Secretary of Homeland Security Tom Ridge discussed plans to boost the number of armed law-enforcement agents in the air.
by LISA MATTE SECRETARY OF HOMELAND SECURITY TOM RIDGE LAST WEEK ANNOUNCED PLANS TO “REORGANIZE TO BETTER MOBILIZE” THE PEOPLE AND RESOURCES OF THE DEPARTMENT OF HOMELAND SECURITY (DHS). In a speech at the American Enterprise Institute in Washington, Ridge discussed DHS plans to add more than 5,000 armed federal law enforcement agents for in-flight security; consolidate three different border inspection functions; and consolidate terrorism grant and training programs into one DHS office.
Ridge also announced implementation of the Strategic Communications Resources Effort (SECURE) to provide security clearances and secure video and telephone communications to all the states and territories. For full text of the speech, visit http://www.dhs.gov
